JC Coverage of the runVolunteer of the Week: Sam Jacobs 03/01/2008 Sam Jacobs, 48, is raising money for the Cancer Treatment and Research Trust by challenging himself to complete a 500-mile run. He works as a partner manager for NetApp, a high-tech computer company Why the Cancer Treatment and Research Trust? I am currently raising money for CTRT, a cancer charity based in Mount Vernon, Northwood. I have set myself a 500-mile running challenge and am trying to raise £5,000 through www.justgiving.com/samjacobs500. The goal of CTRT is to raise more than a £1 million by the summer. I chose to run for the CTRT as a friend was having treatment at the hospital where the charity is based. It is a charity based on finding a cure for cancer, and not just drugs to alleviate the symptoms. It seemed like a great cause. I have lost loved ones to this terrible disease. Have you volunteered elsewhere? I was UJS chair in 1981 and Jewish Labour Movement full-time organiser in 1982. I also ran the 1996 London Marathon for the North London Hospice. What do you most enjoy about volunteering? Raising money for a good cause, I feel good about helping people. What is your most memorable volunteering moment: Finishing that 26-mile run for the North London Hospice in blistering heat. Nominate a volunteer we should honour: community@thejc.com |
